LEONARD A. SKOOG
VINALHAVEN………………..Leonard A. “Buddy” Skoog, 92, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2020, at the Calderwood Home.
Buddy was born and grew up on the island and was the son of Gosta “Gus” and Lucy (Swears) Skoog. Following high school, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy, then went to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine where he graduated. Buddy married Edie Lou Coombs on June 15, 1953 and they had two sons, Lennie and Eric.
Buddy worked as a Merchant Marine for several years then was hired by the Maine State Ferry Service where he worked until the age of 89. He and Edie were very active in many civic and charitable causes that benefited the island.
Predeceased by his wife, Edie Lou Skoog, their son, Lennie, sister, Patricia Skoog Duncan, brother, Dennis R. Skoog, he is survived by son, Eric, and several nieces including Wendy D. Crossman (Richard) of Camden, Barbara Barbara Meadows of Washington, and several nephews.
A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held in the summer of 2021 when people can all safely gather again.
Should you wish, memorial donations may be made to Vinalhaven Eldercare Services or to the Union Church.
Eric, John, and Beth extend their deepest gratitude for the loving and professional care provided by Jen Desmond and all of the staff at the Calderwood Home who enabled Buddy to live out his life as he wished and as he deserved, in comfort, surrounded by love, and with dignity, with his devoted cat Theo, on the Island that he loved.
