ALAN W. BROWN
HOPE………………..Alan Walter Brown, 85, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Windward Gardens in Camden.
Alan was born on January 24, 1932, in Waltham, MA, and was the son of Walter and Lillian (Sobey) Brown. He was a member of the Class of 1950 at Waltham High School, and enlisted in the United States Army Reserves, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and provided 34 years of faithful service.
From the mid 1950’s through the 1960’s, he was employed at the Knox County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff. While living in Scarborough, he served as the Executive Officer for the 133rd Battalion at Stevens Avenue Armory in Portland. After retiring the Reserves, he moved back to Hope where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and puttering around the farm.
On July 1, 1978, he married Joy (Gould) Faulkinham. They owned and operated a school bus service for the Hope school district. During retirement, they traveled in their camper visiting many of the military bases around the United States, and enjoyed spending the winter months in Arcadia, Florida. Alan and Joy travelled all the way to Alaska, a special summer vacation of camping they especially enjoyed.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the outstanding care, consideration, and kindness shown to Alan and his family during his stay at Pen Bay Medical Center and Windward Gardens.
Alan is survived by his wife, Joy, of Hope; sons, Michael Brown and his wife, Wendy of Camden; Matt Brown and his wife, Alanna of South Thomaston; daughter, Maureen Clark and her husband, Scott of Prescott, AZ; four stepchildren, Larry Faulkinham, Leeann Verhille and her husband, Gary, all of Randolph; Lynn Mitchell of Winterport; Pete Faulkinham of Gardiner; 11 grandchildren, Travis, McKenzie, Caitlin, Reuben, Autumn, Erin, Eric, Savannah, Ben, Jordan, Paige; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Marcia Alice Brown in 1977.
Calling hours will be held 5-7PM, Friday, June 9, 2017 at Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain Street, Camden. A graveside service will be held at 2PM, Monday, June 12, 2017 at Hope Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Susan Stonestreet officiating, followed by a gathering at Hatchet Mountain Publick House in Hope. Memorial gifts may be made to Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org.
