CAPT. WILLIAM D. TAYLOR, USN (Ret)
CAMDEN………………..Capt. William D. Taylor, USN (Ret), passed away on August 27, 2015 in Rockport. Born on June 6, 1921 in Oakland, California, he was the son of David Belton and Gladys (Duncan) Taylor. A 1943 graduate of University of California at Berkley, he advanced his education throughout his life. At Berkley, he served in the ROTC entering the U.S. Navy after graduation. On January 26, 1946, Bill married Constance Ann Fanning in Newton, Massachusetts. Bill served 30 years in the U.S. Navy retiring as a Captain in 1973. His military service spanned WWII in the Pacific theater; the Korean Conflict in the “Bay of Pigs”; the Cuban missile crisis; the recovery of the Mercury astronauts in the Atlantic; then in Vietnam where he received several meritorious medals and commendations. Bill worked another 20 years after retirement as a consultant for U.S. defense related industries. In 1994, Bill and Connie relocated to Camden. For the next 21 years, Bill was involved with volunteer service in and around the Camden area including the Camden Conference, the Camden Public Library, Habitat for Humanity, Camden Rotary, UMA’s Senior College, MOAA, member and former president of the Pine Tree Chapter of Military Officer’s Club, and the Literacy Volunteers of Mid-Coast Maine.He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Constance Taylor on April 23, 1996, a sister, Jean in 1993. Surviving are his five children, Mary (Taylor) Morrissette and her husband, Leo of Estero, FL; Therese Taylor of New Haven, CT; Ann (Taylor) Schaeffer of Arlington, VA; David B. Taylor of CT; and William D. Taylor, Jr. and his wife, Mary Ellen of Manassas, VA; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Chapel Service and burial with military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery and will be announced. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
