Obituary for Robert Porter
ROBERT H. PORTER
LINCOLNVILLE……………….Robert H. Porter passed away January 17, 2020 at his home in Lincolnville, at the age of 90. He was the youngest of ten children of George F. and Marie E. (Gamache) Porter. Bob attended school in Lincolnville and Camden, and as a teenager, set pins at the Lucky Strike Bowling Alley in Camden and several other odd jobs. He joined the US Army on February 15, 1951 doing his basic training in Alabama and was deployed to Germany where he served during the Korean Conflict. Shortly after returning home from the service, Bob settled in Springfield, Massachusetts where he worked at Milton Bradley Co. and went to broadcast school there. He then moved to Boston where he obtained employment at the Schraffs Restaurant chain in a few years became manager of the restaurant in downtown Boston. In 1963, he moved to Compton, California where he worked as a mailman for the US Postal Service delivering mail on a seven mile route. He retired in 1990 and returned to Lincolnville where he built his home on a small piece of his ancestral land.
Bob enjoyed every minute of his retirement doing exactly as he wanted enjoying his gardening, cooking, music (the louder the better), visiting with his family and enjoying all of the family gatherings, going on picnics and kite flying and road trips with his best friend and her husband. He was an avid supporter of wildlife and conservation efforts.
Bob had two families that he loved very much, the Porters of Lincolnville and the Leach family of Camden who he adopted.
Predeceased by his parents, four brothers and five sisters, Bob is survived by his nieces, Rose Stebbins and her husband David of Lincolnville, Ginger Shepard of Rockland, Susan Hodgdon of Colorado; a nephew, Curt Beverage and his wife, Pam, of Sidney; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews and their families. Also surviving is his best friend, Carol Gilbert and her husband Wallace. Bob’s many relatives and friends reach from Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Arizona, California and Alaska. He lived his life as he wanted with no fuss or muss and he died as he had wanted, at home quietly and peacefully. Bob will be sadly missed by all who knew him and his wonderful sense of humor and loving nature. A simple graveside service will be held announced in the spring to be held at Lincolnville Cemetery on Route 52 according to his wishes.
