Obituary for Raymond Lee "Skip" Davenport

BELFAST…………… Raymond L. “Skip” Davenport, a resident of Belfast, passed away peacefully on January
19, 2023 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Skip was born in Ashland on July 20, 1935 to the late Raymond and Beryl (Sutherland) Davenport. He
attended Ashland schools and graduated from Ashland Community High School in 1953. He began to
work for James W. Sewall Company engineering consulting firm in Old Town, where he remained for 45
years. He held many positions overseeing engineering assignments around Maine and New England,
especially the construction of municipal treatment plants. His work included extensive projects in the
construction of the Sugarloaf Ski facilities and construction of the hotel and the Robert Trent Jones golf
course there. He ended his career as Construction Administrator for the firm.
Skip married Etta Libby Davenport in 1961; and Joan Bohan Davenport in 1990.
Skip loved to recall his adventure in 1956, a 3-month traverse of Northeast Aroostook County, surveying
and appraising wild woodlands for timberland management. He lived in a tent, pulled supplies
harnessed to a sled, with supplies dropped from airplanes (codfish was fed to the bears!).
Skip will be remembered for his work ethic and his love of Maine. He enjoyed many years sailing the
Gulf of Maine, and skiing in Maine and Colorado.
He is predeceased by his parents, his siblings, Allen Davenport, Richard Davenport, and Pauline
Davenport Rand; and his wife Joan. He is survived by cousins, nieces, and friends, including Joan Kinney
and Etta Davenport. A graveside service will be held in the spring in Linneus.
