Obituary for Mary Louise Eugley

Mary Lou Eugley
CAMDEN………………Mary Louise (Hahn) Eugley, aged 98, died April 9th 2022 at Quarry Hill, Camden, after a long and healthy life. She was the widow of Jenness Pearl Eugley, who died in 2013. Mary Lou was born in Easton, PA on August 16, 1923, the daughter of Asher Lovene Hahn and Florence Mae (Schultz) Hahn. She grew up on Fairview Ave. in Easton and graduated from Wilson Borough High School in 1941, and Centenary Junior College in 1943. After a whirlwind courtship with a young Maine soldier who was training at Lehigh University, she and Jenness P. Eugley were married on August 1st 1944 in Easton PA., and had 68 happy years together. While Jenness served in the Pacific during World War II, Mary Lou moved to his family’s farm in West Lincolnville, where she had her first daughter, Gwen, and learned to tend a wood fire and bake wonderful biscuits and pies.
After the war, they lived in Orono while Jenness completed his degree In Engineering at the University of Maine. During her husband’s career at RCA they lived in New Jersey (Glendora and Moorestown) and finally Winchester, MA. During the early years her family grew to include a son, Alan, and Mary Lou began a life-long commitment to serving her church and community. In Glendora, she started a Girl Scout Troop and created the town’s first library from a deserted Dixie Cup stand.
While living In Winchester MA, Mary Lou remained active in Girl Scouting, training the Patrol for the first National Round-Up in 1961. She was also director of Camp Joy, held at the Girl Scout Cabin in the Middlesex Fells during the early 1960s. Her commitment to “leaving your campsite better than you found it” continued in her church and community activities. Mary Lou received the Valiant Woman Award from Church Women United in 1993 for her coordination and creation of the Meditation Room at Winchester Hospital, the Share a Meal Program for elders, and the World Day of Prayer. She chaired the ENKA Fair and was president of the Garden Club, succeeding in bringing a fountain to the Winchester Commons. But her heart was with her First Congregational Church in Winchester, where she served on the Diaconate and Search Committees, headed the Church Fair and Women’s Association, and wrote and directed the 150th Church Celebration and Pagent.

Mary Lou loved writing, and wrote consistently from early adulthood. She honed her craft in Certificate programs, and delighted in being published in such periodicals as Good Old Days. She continued this interest until her last year, participating in writing groups at Quarry Hill.
Exploring the Eugley geneology was a years’ long effort. With their youngest child, Melissa, in tow, Mary Lou and Jenness spent many a weekend tracing the history of the family, who came from Germany to Waldoboro Maine in 1752. They published The Eugley Geneology, in which Mary Lou wrote the narratives culled from those many interviews, and Jenness created the family tree charts.
After her husband’s retirement she got to enjoy trips to England and the Canadian Rockies with Jenness, spent summers at the family home in Lincolnville Center, volunteered her wonderful pies to local church functions, and kept her cookie jar full for her grandchildren. When her husband’s Parkinson’s disease necessitated, Mary Lou and Jenness made the move from their home of 50 years in Winchester MA to Quarry Hill in Camden Maine, coming back home in many ways at age 81. Mary Lou continued to be active in the Quarry Hill community, heading up the Library, establishing a Welcoming Committee and directing Book-In-Hand readings as well as participating in the writing group and trying her hand at oil painting. She was also considered to be the best dressed woman at dinner every night! She attended the First Congregational Church in Camden until health issues intervened, and she enjoyed a drink with friends until the end. Her life was full.
Mary Lou is survived by her daughters Gwen Kopka (Richard) and Melissa (Paul); grandchildren Allison Blass (Geoffrey), Elizabeth Eugley, Seth Eugley, Nicolina Jackson, Paul Jackson Jr., and William Jackson; great grandchildren Amelia and Brady. She was predeceased by her husband Jenness and her son Alan.
