Obituary for Hugh Donald Curran

CAMDEN…………Hugh Donald Curran, 84, passed away at Sussman House in Rockport, on December 15, 2021. Hugh was born in New York City, NY, on March 24, 1937, to father Hugh Curran and mother Mary Curran (nee Sloan). Hugh went to sea for the first time at the age of 15 and worked his way up to chief engineer, which he sailed as on hundreds of voyages until his last trip teaching aboard the Maine Maritime training vessel, State of Maine, in 2015. His love of ships, military history, and the sea was constant during his entire life. In addition to being a proud member of the U. S. Merchant Marine, Hugh was also a Commander in the U.S. Navy, and an active member of the Naval Reserve after his military retirement. Hugh was always an advocate for fellow merchant mariners and naval seamen during his life and helped many get the benefits to which they were entitled. Hugh circled the globe seven times during his career, and, when asked about his favorite travel memory, said it was “seeing the Taj Mahal in moonlight.” Hugh’s brilliance and kindness touched so many lives, and he will always be remembered as a master storyteller with a charming, “salty” sense of humor and as a wonderful and loyal husband, father, and friend. Hugh is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Curran, (nee Steinle), his daughter, Rachel Curran of Washington, DC, and son, David Curran of Portland, Maine. A military internment will be held on Monday, June 27, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery on 163 Mt. Vernon Rd. in Augusta, Maine. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com. Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain Street, Camden.
