HELEN A. JONES
CAMDEN………………..Helen Lucine Arau Jones (80), of Camden, went to be in the loving arms of the Lord on Monday, January 11, 2021. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Sussman House of Rockport. Born at the former Camden Hospital in Camden on August 9, 1940, she was the daughter of Louis Vincent and Mary Lucille (Leadbetter) Arau. As a child, she loved visiting Lake St. George with her family during the summer months.
A 1958 graduate of Camden High School, Helen loved taking part in her class activities, field trips, and being a member of the varsity basketball team. Following graduation, she went on to receive her diploma in Secretarial Science at Husson College.
Helen loved serving her community, holding positions as town clerk and tax collector in Lincolnville, then served as town clerk in Warren. A diligent and devoted worker, Helen often spent extra time working at home when visually impaired people required assistance in completing forms and issuing permits. In addition, Helen participated in fundraising events and walk-a-thons taking part in many local charity events. An outstanding bowler and esteemed member of her league for many years, Helen also enjoyed playing Beano at the American Legion hall in Camden.
Throughout her life, Helen held many interests; she would often play scrabble with her daughters, and girlfriends. She loved spending time in her gardens and would plant and sell flowers and vegetables roadside during her summers.
Helen could be described as a bird enthusiast. Her favorites were cardinals and yellow finches. She could often be seen sporting cardinals on her sweaters, and given the opportunity, she’d spend hours marveling at and researching the birds around her.
Helen was a well-lived and gregarious woman who found great comfort in other people, and others found a vibrant spirit in her. She had a contagious laugh, a great sense of humor, and loved dancing at social events.
Helen cherished spending time with her children and family. She embraced the challenges of single motherhood with grace and left her children with memories close to their hearts. She loved taking road trips and camping trips with her five children to scenic areas around Maine.
Her family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks for the wonderful and compassionate care of Helen, during her time at the Quarry Hill in Camden and the Sussman House in Rockport.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Basil D. Arau, Leo J. Arau, and sister, Beverly McConkey.
Surviving are her children, Jennifer (Scott) Mickey, Julie (Joel) Gushee, Janine (Cliff) Meservey, Vincent Jones, and Jason Jones; a brother, Louis (Cynthia) Vincent Arau Jr.; sister, Joan Landwehr; and sister-in-law Candace Arau; grandchildren, Matthew Shoudy and his fiancée, Amber Wheaton, Ericka (Sean) Faucher, Brittany Meservey, Sierra Meservey, McKenzie Meservey and her fiancée, Scott Chapp, Nicholas Johnson, Nathaniel Johnson, Harrison Garcia; great-grandchildren Maddison Shoudy, Dustin Dodge, Mason Shoudy, and Jacob Faucher;several nieces and nephews, granddog Sky, and friends too numerous to list, but not forgotten.
A graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden will be announced in the spring.
