Obituary for George Ellis Underhill

CAMDEN - George Ellis Underhill, 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday July 9, 2022 at home,
surrounded by family.
Born in Camden, Maine on September 17, 1941, he was the son of George Underhill and Agnes
Basford Underhill. George grew up in Lincolnville and graduated from Camden High School in 1959.
On October 17, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Gypsie Converse Underhill.
George worked for the Camden Tannery and later Maine Egg Farm to support his and Gypsie’s
family, which grew to include their three children: Cory, Vicki and Laurie. In 1980, George and Gypsie
purchased Cedar Crest Motel & Coffee Shop in Camden from Gypsie’s mother. They owned and
operated the motel together until they sold the business and retired in 2000.
George was a talented craftsman and artist. He carved award-winning birds and painted landscapes.
He was a skilled woodworker, and built everything from furniture and cabinets to toys and clocks.
George also enjoyed gardening, camping, four-wheeling and hunting. George enjoyed being an active
member of the community. He was a Mason, and previously a member of the Lion’s Club and a Boy
Scout leader.
George will be greatly missed by his family.
Surviving are his children: son Cory Underhill and his wife Katrina, daughter Vicki Catell and her
husband Mark, and daughter Laurie Byant and her husband Stan; grandchildren: Krystle Catell, Jason
Underhill, Rachele Hartley, Dustin Underhill, Nic Sukeforth, Christopher Bryant, Nathan Catell and
Peter Bryant; great-grandchildren: Acacia Hartley, Phoebe Hartley, Easton Underhill and Grace
Sukeforth; sisters: Shirley Braley, Eva Botley; and sister-in-law Carol Underhill. And many nieces and
nephews; longtime friends: Sandra and Phill Tibbetts, and Connie and Doug Leavitt.
George’s beloved wife, Gypsie, predeceased him in January 2022.
A public celebration of life and reception will be held on Sunday July 31st at 3:00pm at the Rockport
Masonic Center, 361 Main Street, Rockport.
