Obituary of Evelyn T. Woods
CAMDEN……………Evelyn “Lyn” Tietze Freeman Woods lost her fight with cancer on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at her home in Camden, Maine, with her devoted daughter, Tamzyn, at her side. Born Evelyn Andre Tietze in New York City on May 12, 1936, to Robert and Nancy (Hooper) Tietze, Lyn spent her early years in Greenwich, CT, with her family and beloved governess, Ruth (Monroe) Schibi (of Camden), and summered at her grandfather, Parker Morse Hooper’s Camden estate, Hill Acres. Her family moved to Coral Gables, FL in the early 1950’s, where Lyn graduated from Coral Gables High School in 1954. She briefly attended the University of Miami, but was distracted by a budding modeling career, which ultimately took her to Cuba, where she became a show girl at the renowned Tropicana Club in 1957. After fleeing the growing Cuban rebellion, she worked for National Airlines, which took her back to New York City, where she met and married Talbot O. “Tim” Freeman, Jr., son of Talbot O. and Ellen (Goldsborough) Freeman of New York and Camden, ME. Lyn and Tim moved to Camden year-round in 1959 to raise their children and caretake her grandfather’s estate until Mr. Hooper’s death in 1966.
Lyn was an avid equestrian, winning numerous ribbons at local fairs and horse shows, and she operated a riding school at Hill Acres, where many local children enjoyed attending her lessons. After Parker Hooper’s death, Hill Acres was sold, except for the carriage house, known locally as The Lodge. Lyn and Tim returned to New York city, where they eventually divorced. Lyn made a career as a travel agent in New York and continued to summer in Maine at The Lodge. In 1979 she married Philip H. Woods of Exeter, NH and New York City. Upon Phil’s retirement from AT&T in 1998, Lyn and Phil moved back to Camden permanently. In retirement, Lyn enjoyed volunteering at Maine Coast Artists, in Rockport (now Center for Maine Contemporary Art), gardening and landscaping around the Lodge, and lunching with friends, while Phil kept busy by researching Lyn’s family shipbuilding history, and writing a book about it (Bath, Maine’s Charlie Morse: Ice King and Wall Street Scoundrel). Lyn and Phil were happily married for 38 years, until his death in 2017. Lyn was known to her many friends as a beautiful, fun-loving, and adventuresome woman who lived life to the fullest, and told many amusing stories of her exploits, such as cruising to Europe on the “Andria Doria” just months before it sank, helping friends smuggle money out of Cuba, teaching English at the language school in Hamburg, Germany, or riding snowmobiles in her mink coat with her son, Talbot, just to name a few.
Lyn is survived by her daughter, Tamzyn Freeman Palmer, of Camden, ME; her son Talbot O. Freeman III, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; her brothers: Robert Tietze and his wife, Phyllis, of Highlands, NC, and Christian Tietze, of Ft. Pierce, FL; three grandchildren, Aislinn Palmer Diamanti of Port Townsend, WA, Dylan Palmer of Seattle, WA, and Riley Fitzpatrick-Freeman of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; her step-children Wendy Woods Ylmaz of Northborough, MA, and Alexander Woods of Arlington, VA. and their families; her sister-in-law, Elizabeth “Missy”(Freeman) Staunton, of Rockland, ME, and son, Thomas Staunton, of Los Angeles, CA; her “adopted” brother, Fred Schibi, of Camden and Rifle, CO, and his family; as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and long-time friends. Lyn was predeceased by both her husbands, and her step-son, Andrew Woods, of Kansas City, MO.
A Celebration of Lyn’s Life will be planned for the summer of 2021.
