Obituary for Ernest Fred Littlefield
ERNEST F. LITTLEFIELD
LINCOLNVILLE………………………Ernest Fred Littlefield, 93, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, left us peacefully and free from pain on December 9, 2022 with family at his bedside at the Sussman House in Rockport. Ernest, the third child of Manson G. and Rose (Larrabee) Littlefield, was born in Prospect on July 20, 1929 where he spent his early years.
The family moved to Camden during WWII when his father took a job at the Camden Shipyard. Ernest graduated from Camden High School in 1947 and promptly enlisted in the U.S. Navy, which was one of the highlights of his life. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Littlerock, a survey ship, which took depth soundings in the Persian Gulf. He told many stories of the countries when the ship docked in ports. In 1952, he was discharged and worked at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, CT. Ernest spent his leisure time boating, water skiing, and working on race cars at Stafford Spring. In 1961, he signed on with RCA and went to Thule, Greenland to work on the BMEWS-Site 1 (early warning system for ICBMS between Iceland and Greenland) having many stories from his time there. In 1965, he returned and co-owned and managed Jay Peak Ski Lodge at Jay Mountain in Jay, Vermont. Deciding to return to Camden to be with his family, he purchased land on Megunticook Lake in Lincolnville where he and his father built a house where he spent the rest of his life.
In 1972, he married Jane (Curit) Young who had two children, Andy and Amy Young. Then the adventures began, camping, bicycling, mountain climbing, swimming, boating and skating, a shared loving life.
Ernie was very proud to have served as a Selectman for the Town of Lincolnville from 1987 to 1993, a member of several advisory boards including the Solid Waste, Lincolnville Central School, and Ferry Service boards. In addition, Ernie served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Megunticook Dam Committee.
A skilled finish carpenter and builder, Ernie owned his own business for many years. After he retired, he went to work with his son, Andy, working well into his 80’s. In his spare time, he enjoyed photography, painting pictures, and traveling.
Ernie was predeceased by his parents, brother, Onel Littlefield, sisters, Winifred Stanley and Mary Littlefield, and his many beloved cats and dogs.
Surviving is his wife, of 50 years, E. Jane (Curit) Littlefield, son, Andrew Young and his wife, Annette of Lincolnville, daughter, Amy Ames and husband, Clifton of West Rockport; grandchildren, Emma Young of Bowdoin; Annie Young of China, Ivan Young of Orono, Bryson Ames and Braydon Ames both of West Rockport, Jasmine Bickford of Palermo, Jayda Bickford of China, Michael Davis of China; sister-in-law, Patricia McLaughlin and her husband, Richard and their sons, Ricky and Peter McLaughlin all of Lincolnville Beach; greatgrandchildren, Thatcher and Reagan; nephew Adrian (Carolyn) Stanley; Stephen Stanley, Jerry Littlefield, and Irene Littlefield; great nephews, Jonathan (Alyssa) Stanley, Matthew (Marta) Stanley, great-great nephew, Adrian Gerard Stanley, and great-great nieces, Eleanor Alexandra Stanley, Eleanor Alexandra Stanley.
