Obituary for Dorothy M Wood

DOROTHY M. WOOD
BELFAST……………..Dorothy (Dottie) Merrill Wood died peacefully at age 99 on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. She was born in Boston, MA, on January 4, 1920 to Marion E. and John W. Merrill. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur O. Wood, Jr., her parents, and her brother, John (Jack) W. Merrill, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Susan (Dan) W. Nichols of ME, Leslie J. Wood of SC; brother-in-law Charles B. Wood of MA, grandchildren Elizabeth N. Coleman of VA, Katherine S. Nichols of MD, and Stephen J. Nixon of NC; four grandchildren, and ten nieces and nephews.
Dottie graduated from St. Mary's in the Mountains School in NH, and Simmons College in MA, earning a degree in Library Science. Dottie began her library career in Cohasset, MA, where she met and married her husband. After the War, the couple settled in Sea Cliff, LI, NY, where Dottie resumed her career as Children's Librarian at the Bryant Library in Roslyn, NY. After retirement, Arthur and Dottie moved to Scituate, MA, where they lived until Arthur's death in 2011, and Dottie moved to Maine to live with her daughter, Susan.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Private Home Care, Inc., for their help in caring for Dottie at home. During the last months of her life, the family appreciated the loving care given Dottie by the staff at the Residence at Tall Pines in Belfast.
There will be a memorial service and celebration of life on Monday, July 29, 2019 at 11 AM, followed by a reception. Interment and a graveside service will be held on September 19, 2019 at 11 AM at the Newton Cemetery at 791 Walnut St. Newton, MA. The Reverend Debra Arnold will officiate at both services.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to direct any expressions of sympathy to the Music Ministry of the Searsport First Congregational Church, PO Box 261, Searsport, ME 04974.
