Obituary for Bowen Marshall Jr.
BOWEN F. MARSHALL, JR.
ROCKPORT.................Bowen Floyd Marshall, Jr. passed away as he lived his life, quietly and respectfully, on November 27, 2019 in Camden, Maine. Known by most as “Bo”, to his family as “Bugs” and to his wife Racine as “Honey.” Born in Olathe, Kansas on May 20, 1944 to Bowen Floyd Marshall, Sr. and Marilyn Eva Benson, Bo grew up in Winter Harbor, Maine as also the step-son of Ozzie Coombs. The oldest of four boys, he is survived by his best friend and wife of 31 years, Racine; brothers Ralph Marshall and his wife Maggie, Michael Coombs and his wife Coral, and David Coombs. He also is survived by some wonderful children and grandchildren: son Jeff Marshall and his wife Kristi with their children Connor and Kayli; Derek Marshall and his fiancée Shannon Castle with his children Eden and Gabriel; Jennifer Payson and her children Nalani and Isabella; and Nicole Payson and her partner Michel Robinson.
Bo was multi-talented and known for his quiet intellect, reserved humor, hard work and as an all-around outdoorsman. Bo graduated from Sumner High School as his class valedictorian. Working as a caddie at Grindstone Neck Golf Course, shagging golf balls with a baseball glove, lobstering in the summer and numerous other jobs helped him to pay for his college education. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine at Orono where he also spent a short time teaching before working as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Navy in Rhode Island for two years. He moved back to Maine in the mid-seventies to work at Tibbett’s Industries in Camden where he led the amplified telecoil development program eventually utilized by 90% of the world’s hearing aid industry at the time while acquiring numerous patents and furthering industry leading technological advancements. He was known as a great teacher and mentor to those who worked with him who said of him, “If you were lucky enough to spend time with him he would even show you a little of his sense of humor.” Most knew him as an avid hunter, fisherman and athlete. Spring and summer meant fishing for trout along the “Airline” and the fall brought deer hunting success for many years as a Registered Maine Guide. A great athlete in high school, Bo was recognized in the Mid-Coast as one of the best golfers in the area routinely winning club championships at Goose River Golf Course. His passion for golf, hard work and business led him to a partnership to purchase and run Goose River for approximately fifteen years. He coached and officiated Little League, High School and YMCA swimming while his children were in school rarely missing an event.
Bo and Racine had a camp at Nicatous Lake for the past 20 plus years where they enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, swimming, boating, biking and walking – anything outside and always together. In his later years, they toured together throughout the country in their RV able to eventually visit all 50 states. As the effects of Alzheimer’s began to set in for Bo, their desire to travel was completed with their trip of a lifetime together, from Honolulu to Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia.
Despite the progression of Alzheimer’s, Bo’s smile and adoring pride for those he loved remained until the end.
