Obituary for Ann M Daly
CAMDEN — Ann Mickler Daly, 94, passed away quietly at Quarry Hill on Saturday, May 23, 2020 after a long illness.
Born in 1925, in Camp Chase, Ohio, to Margaret Melsopp Mickler from Birr, County Offaly, Ireland, and Carl Mickler from St. Augustine, Florida, she and her three brothers grew up on a farm in Ohio. After several floods, the family sold the farm and moved to New York City for employment and to be near other Irish relatives who had settled in the city.
Ann’s favorite pastime was going to movies in downtown theaters with her cousins and seeing movie stars when they visited the theaters. Graduating from Straubenmuller Textile High School with secretarial skills, Ann immediately joined the World War II effort and took a position with United States Navy Ship Stores at 90 Church St., in the heart of downtown Manhattan.
After the war ended, Ann married John L. Daly Jr., a decorated World War II veteran who had served in the United States Army’s Third Division in Africa and Italy. They had three children, Barbara, Margaret, and John. The family moved from the projects of Brooklyn to the Washington Heights section of Manhattan where they lived for 11 years before moving upstate to Mahopac, New York.
When her children were all in school, Ann took a position at the Lincoln Hall School, Lincolndale, NY, in the Accounts Payable department. After several years, she went to work as an executive secretary at the Con Edison Indian Point Nuclear Station, New York, where John L. Daly was a General Watch Foreman.
Ann loved gardening and being outdoors. She could usually be found tending her flowers and shrubs to provide a beautiful setting for her home. For many years, she was a member of Merryspring Nature Center. Until the last few years, she could outwalk people many years younger than herself.
Ann was an active member of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden and was Eucharistic minister, bringing communion to shut-ins. She had many friends in Our Lady of Good Hope Women’s Club.
Ann loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren unconditionally and always made each one feel very special. She always made family gatherings fun with her enthusiastic personality. Everyone in the family has many wonderful memories of times spent with her. Ann will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Predeceased by her parents, husband, and three brothers, she is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Carroll (Wayne) of Marlboro, New York, and Margaret Delano (John) of Rockport; and her son, John L. Daly III, (Gretchen) of Belfast; eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff in The Courtyard at Quarry Hill for their loving care of their mother and grandmother.
A funeral mass will be announced. Burial will be at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta where Ann’s husband is buried.
