Camden’s Gold Post Cane Recipient Dies at age 101
CAMDEN……………………Adele Christina Hopkins, 101, widow of Lawrence N. Hopkins, died on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill in Camden. Born on November 28, 1918 in Tenants Harbor, she was the daughter of Herbert and Norma (Wall) Hawkins. Adele was Valedictorian of the Class of 1935 at St. George High School. A graduate of Ballard Business School in Rockport, Adele went to work at the Camden Farmers Union as a bookkeeper, where she served as manager during WWII from 1944 to 1946.
On June 13, 1943, she married Lawrence N. Hopkins of Camden. In 1956, she went to work for attorney Gilbert Harmon who owned Mutual Credit Bureau in Camden and worked there 21 years. She also worked at the law office of Harmon, Jones and Sanford retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Hopkins had been an active member of the Chestnut Street Baptist Church, where she served as church auditor for 35 years, sang in the choir, was a member and officer of Chadavae and the Ladies’ Mission Circle. Adele was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star and 28 year member of the Camden Women’s Club. She also served as a director and treasurer of the Camden Home for Senior Citizens.
Predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Hopkins in 2000 and brother, Gerald Hawkins in 2006, she is survived by one son, Allan L. Hopkins and his wife, Alice of Camden; three grandchildren, Melissa A. Mank and husband, Michael of Hope; Timothy L. Hopkins and partner, Angel Wall of South Hope; Paul Hopkins of Camden; great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Courtney Mank; Shannon Hopkins; Elizabeth Mank; nephews , Jerry Hawkins and wife, Debbie; Jeffrey Hawkins; niece, Pamela Grimail and husband, Daniel; three great-great-grandsons; two great-great-granddaughters; many cousins and friends.

Calling hours will be held 3-5PM, Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the Long Funeral Home, 9 Mountain Street, Camden. The funeral service will be held at 2PM, Friday, December 20, 2019 at the Chestnut Street Baptist Church in Camden with the Rev. Adam Kohlstrom officiating.
