Obituary for Vera R Ames

VERA R. AMES
VINALHAVEN……………….Vera Ruth (Guptill) Ames, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2014 at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead. Vera lived a very full life, residing between Vinalhaven and Matinicus. She spent her childhood on Criehaven, moving to Rockland in her teens. A member of “Amerca’s Greatest Generation”, Vera helped to protect our freedom on the home front while assembling Navy assault boats at the Camden Shipyard.
She loved her family and was always there to help whenever needed. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Vera was predeceased by her first husband, Lyford “Dike” Conary, sister, Virginia Hartford; and her second husband, Lavon S. Ames, Jr. Surviving is her brother, Albert “Bill” Guptill and his wife, Margaret; daughters, Hazel smith and her husband, Malcolm; Linda Lynch and her husband, Burke; step-daughter, Carolyn Ames; step-son, Lavon “Biscuit” Ames, III; sister, Joan Mitchell; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts in her memory may be made to Vinalhaven Eldercare Services, 18 Beaver Dam Road, Vinalhaven, ME 04863. A memorial service will be held at 11AM, Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Pleasant River Chapel. Interment will follow in the Brown’s Head Cemetery followed by a reception at the home of Linda and Burke Lynch. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com.
